What Mindfulness Actually Is and How to Use it Daily

Why Mindfulness Matters

Welcome back to the Conscious Edge podcast! I’m Alecia St. Germain, and in this episode, I had the pleasure of diving deep into the concept of mindfulness with our resident wellness expert and my longtime friend, Jonathan Dugger. Mindfulness is more than just a trending buzzword—it’s an ancient practice with the potential to transform how we live, work, and think.

In today’s hustle culture, we often find ourselves glorifying the grind, juggling multiple tasks, and feeling overwhelmed. But as Jonathan emphasized, there’s no such thing as effective multitasking. Instead, mindfulness teaches us to focus on one thing at a time, leading to better productivity and less stress.

Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment, aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. This practice can help us combat the distractions and stressors that dominate modern life, from the endless to-do lists to the pressure of building wealth and managing a business.

The Science Behind Mindfulness

Jonathan shares the science of mindfulness. Research shows that consistent mindfulness practice can physically change the brain, reducing activity in the amygdala, the area responsible for our fight-or-flight response, and increasing activity in regions related to creativity, memory, and language. This shift not only helps us stay calm under pressure but also enhances our ability to focus and solve problems effectively.

One study Jonathan mentioned involved a car manufacturing plant where employees who practiced mindfulness saw a significant reduction in errors. The attention to detail that mindfulness fosters can lead to massive improvements in productivity and quality, a lesson that applies to any industry.

Practical Mindfulness for Everyday Life

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Jonathan guided us through a simple mindfulness exercise that you can try anywhere, even while driving (with your eyes open, of course!). By paying attention to your senses—what you see, hear, smell, and feel—you can start to build awareness and presence in your daily life.

This practice can extend to everything you do, from eating to working to simply taking a walk. The key is to approach these tasks with curiosity and without judgment, allowing yourself to fully engage with the present moment.

Mindfulness in Business

As business owners and wealth builders, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of daily tasks and long-term goals. But incorporating mindfulness into your routine can help you stay focused, reduce stress, and make better decisions. As Jonathan pointed out, when we narrow our focus and eliminate distractions, we can achieve more in less time, with less stress. Whether you’re leading a team, managing investments, or just trying to get through your to-do list, mindfulness can be a powerful tool in your arsenal.

We’re just scratching the surface of what mindfulness can do, and we’ll be exploring this topic more in future episodes. But for now, I encourage you to try incorporating mindfulness into your daily life. It may feel strange at first, especially if you’re used to running on autopilot, but with practice, the benefits will become clear.

Remember, mindfulness is a state of being that requires practice, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

We hope this episode resonates with you and inspires you to bring mindfulness into your life and business. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so feel free to reach out to us at hello@consciousedge.com.
